Domaine Garon
Following Jeb Dunnuck, big fan of Domaine Garon, new laudatory article about this Côte-Rotie estate in the latest issue of Decanter, the prestigious magazine dedicated to wine and distributed in more than 90 countries.
Matt Walls (Decanter) :
“It might be small and understated, but with quality increasing each year Matt Walls says it’s only a matter of time before this domaine becomes a household name.”
“The quality across the board has been gradually increasing over the past few years, which is what prompted my visit. Their 2021s are surprisingly strong for such a challenging year. Though their style is their own, if forced to compare I’d place them somewhere between Ogier, Barge and Jasmin.
The wines, when tasted, speak first and foremost of their origins – not the hand that made them. The confident but understated approach means this domaine isn’t yet as well-known as some of the starrier names of Côte-Rôtie. But with quality like this, it’s only a matter of time.”

Wine-Searcher awards
Wine-Searcher, the world reference in the search engine for wines and spirits, has just awarded its medals for the year 2021. 🙂
Out of 37,944 merchants worldwide (and 93 in the Grand Duchy), only 4,431 have received one or more prizes (for 7 in the GD).
For Luxembourg, OWC has received this year 3 gold medals (the maximum allowed) in 5 categories (Burgundy, Bordeaux, France, Europe, World).
The criteria used by Wine-Searcher are as follows (see wine-searcher.com):
“Wine-Searcher’s Retailer Awards aim to recognize truly excellent price lists. To have been awarded, your price list must have demonstrated:
- A wide range of high-quality wines or spirits based on critic scores.
- Significant depth and breadth across regions.
- Consistency throughout the year.
And your store must also show outstanding customer service.”
Consequently OWC keeps (and above all) 5 stars for the quality of the service ! 🙂

Domaines des Remizieres & Castello Romitorio
It is always a pleasure to announce a new partnership. Especially when this concerns 2 great estates. 🙂
During a tasting (blind tasting of course) a few weeks ago, all the participants fully agree about the quality of the whole range of these 2 producers.
The first, the Domaine des Remizieres, is located in the northern Rhône and mainly offers vintages of Crozes Hermitage (red and white) and the famous Hermitage (red and white). Jeb Dunnuck “This is unquestionably one of my favorite estates in Crozes hermitage” and Joe Czerwinski (Wine Advocate) “The Cuvée Emilie 2018 and 2019 are terrific, as is the Cuvée Autrement. The brother-and-sister team of Christophe and Emilie Desmeure are hitting on all cylinders “ raved about the quality of the estate’s wines. In addition, prices remain much wiser than their direct neighbors (Chapoutier, Chave)
The second estate takes us to Tuscany and more precisely to Montalcino where we find the famous Brunello de Montalcino. Castello Romitorio is an estate created in 1984 in a rather “cold” climate for the appellation with vines cultivated up to 450m.
Here again the critics are particularly enthusiastic.
Eric Guido (Vinous): “The focus is on the fruit, never the wood, and it results in a wonderfully balanced expression”
Ian d’Agata: “Castello Romitorio’s wines are some of Montalcino’s sleekest and most perfumed”
The notes available here (https://www.owc.lu/…/07/PRESENTATION-TOTAL-new-003.pdf) show how much the estate is praised by professionals. Besides Brunellos, don’t forget the Rosso, the Romitoro cuvée and the Morellino di Scansano with impressive Q/P ratios!
The different vintages from the 2 estates will be available in September and can be reserved now on the site or by message.
To see the tasting notes for the latest vintages from these 2 estates, do not hesitate to subscribe to the newsletter in order to have access to theses ones !

OWC completes its range of Spanish wines with an impressive Q/P ratio with a part of the range of Domaine Envinate. This one has been launched in 2005 by 4 young enthusiasts who wanted to vinify in their areas of origin. The vines come mainly from the Ribeira Sacra, Castilla La Mancha and also Tenerife at sometimes over 1000 m above sea level. The vinification is totally organic. To be tested !
26/01/2021
Palari – Sicilia
OWC now offers you one of the oldest estates on this beautiful italian island: Palari. In 1985, Salvatore Geraci bought a few hectares of vineyards located in the northeastern tip near Messina in order to vinify a wine that would join the big names in Italy. A few years later, the bet was won … There is unanimity regarding the wines of Palari which have always remained authentic Sicilian wines with a Burgundian touch. The Faro cuvée (from the appellation of the same name) has been voted Italian wine of the year several times (Gambero Rosso, Bibenda).
18/01/2021
Domaine Garon
OWC is happy to announce to you that we are going to import in exclusivity for Luxembourg an estate who has, in a few years, gradually catched up the best estates in the Northern Rhone and now offers a complete range from Côtes du Rhone to its 4 cuvées of Cote Rôtie. This is the Domaine Garon to which Jeb Dunnuck, great fan of the Rhone wines, has given tremendous tasting notes to their last releases (98 and 99/100 to the Côte Rotie Les Rochins 2018 and Lancement 2018). Compared to other Cote Rotie producers, the prices are still in the lower range for an impressive quality… All the available wines here

Dominio del Aguila
Guia Penin has just published its 2021 guide in which we discover that the 2014 Gran Reserva Penas Aladas cuvée from Dominio del Aguila is one of the 6 “Giants” that enters the winemaking history of the country.
About the Estate, Guia Penin adds this :
It’s difficult to get to a region like Ribera del Duero and in just over 10 years become a legend. This is what has happened to this winemaker, who has not only been able to create great wines but has also developed his own identity around his wines, something which makes you taste them and say to yourself, “this is Dominio del Águila“.

Dominio del Aguila
It is with great pleasure that OWC presents you a new estate in its already extensive portfolio.
And this is not just any estate !
This is the Bodega Dominio del Aguila in Ribera del Duero. Together with Pingus and Vega Sicilia, it represents the very best in the appellation and in Spain.
After spending time at Domaine de la Romanée Conti and Vega Sicilia, among others, Jorge Monzón decided to devote himself entirely to his vineyard about ten years ago.
The estate’s vines (60 years old for the youngest to the oldest prephylloxeric) are mainly made up of Tempranillo. There are also Bobal, Carinena and Garnacha. The estate’s fantastic white is vinified primarily from the local Albillo grape. They are all located at an altitude of over 800 meters, which keeps the entire range exceptionally fresh.
The range is made up of 4 cuvées in red, 1 in white and 1 “Clarete” blend of red wine and white wine.
The entry-level, Picaro del Aguila, and as Luis Gutierrez of the Wine Advocate notes, has the depth, concentration and nuance of the best wines from many producers. The 2018 (WA 94) was aged for 11 months in barrels.
The Reserva comes from vines planted before 1930 and uses all the varieties present to give complexity to the majority Tempranillo. Aging 29 months in barrels for 2016 (WA 97).
The Gran Reserva, called Penas Eladas according to a specific area of the village of La Aguilera, is produced from vines over 85 years old and underwent a 45-month aging for the 2014 (WA 96). According to Jorge, the idea was not to produce a Gran Reserva because it was expected but rather because the terroir demanded it.
Canta La Perdiz is an isolated plot of vines between 100 and 150 years old. With a smoother structure than Penas Aladas, it spends less time in barrels and presents an aromatic palette unlike other wines from the estate.
The Picaro del Aguila Clarete, rosé produced from a blend of Tempranillo and Albillo is, according to Jorge Monzon, “a wine which is not a rosé but which has the aromas of a white and the spirit of a red. It spends over a year fermenting and aging in barrels. Aging guaranteed !
The white Blanco, made almost exclusively from Albillo, is vinified “à la bourguignonne” and is one of the best white wines in Spain. The 2016, available for purchase, is rated 97 by the WA. This article from the lapassionduvin.com (french forum) is quite revealing in itself of the quality of the white and the estate.

Bordeaux 2017
About the 2017 vintage in Bordeaux, the situation is well summarized by Antonio Galloni : « Although 2017 is not a great vintage across the board, it is a vintage with many great wines ».
Here are the wines of the vintage not to be missed according to him :
Troplong Mondot (98+ pts)
Vieux Château Certan (98 pts)
L’Eglise Clinet – Smith Haut Lafitte – La Gaffeliere (97 pts)
On the side of Neil Martin, the observation is almost identical. For him, Cos d’Estournel, Hosanna, Trotanoy and L’Église-Clinet are among the must have of the vintage (95 pts).
And to finish, Lisa Perroti Brown of The Wine Advocate places on the second step of the podium (after Haut Brion blanc and Château Pavie) with 98 pts: Cos d’Estournel, L’Eglise Clinet and Vieux Château Certan.
At the third step with 97 pts we find Smith Haut Lafitte, La Gaffelière and Pavie Macquin.
Regarding this vintage she specifies:
“Qualitatively, how does 2017 compare to recent vintages? Well, it doesn’t have the highs nor consistency of 2015, 2016 or 2018. But the vintage is generally better than 2011, 2012, 2013 (for sure!) and even 2014. The best 2017s have bags of bright, crunchy fruit with plenty of subtle nuances, offering an opportunity for the wines to blossom into something more with aging.”
“As I alluded earlier, the majority of the 2017s are easy on the palate in youth, and yet the best wines also possess solid backbones and loads of nuances to ensure aging potential. Although a lot of the successful 2017 reds tend to have moderate acidity, the acids can appear fresher because the wines aren’t as rich and powerful as 2015 or 2016. These are mainly elegant, medium-bodied styles with moderate alcohol (generally 13% to 14%) and have intensely perfumed, multilayered aromatic profiles.”
We therefore present you with a detailed selection of the best Bordeaux 2017. This list will be updated regularly with new additions.
In terms of prices, most of the offered wines are currently situated much lower than their counterparts in 2016 and 2018 for a quality not so far off. The current crisis and the problems of the Bordeaux export market explain this decline.
Do not hesitate to contact us if you are looking for a specific wine.
